Landscaping Tips – To Rake Or Not To Rake… How Do Falling Leaves Affect Your Lawn’s Health?

If you grew up in a neighborhood with lots of trees, chances are you had to put in plenty of hours each fall raking them all together, bagging them up, and then sending them off somewhere, most likely to the landfill. With the weather getting colder and the sun is out less, your lawn can still be a bright green if you care for it right. It is also a time when leaves fall from the trees, and that brings up an important question: To Rake or not to Rake?

What to Do With Your Leaves?

You were probably told that the reason for raking was not only so that the yard would be tidier and that the leaves would kill the grass. However most homeowner mow their own lawns and leave grass on the lawn as mulch. Grass cuttings break down over time and when absorbed by the living grass add nutrients to the grass. Many people do the same with leaves. Grass does thrive when it receives nutrition and theoretically leaves are nutrition. But is this this the correct decision?

Leaves Can Harm Your Lawn

Your lawn lives on water, sun, and fertilizer, and the leaves can block these necessary items from getting to the soil. Excessive leaf matter on your lawn going into winter is bad for several reasons. First, it will smother the grass and if not removed and very soon next spring it will inhibit growth. Second, it can promote snow mold diseases. And finally, turf damage from critters (voles, mice) can be more extensive next spring. It is now believed that leaves can actually hurt your lawn. It’s for these reasons that leaving leaves on your lawn is not recommended.
