Everyone wants to have a great lawn but not everyone is willing to to invest time it takes to have one. Below are some of the fall and winter tips to insure your lawn bounces back next spring and is healthy before the summer hits.
Don’t Trim Your Grass Too Aggressively
Make sure to stay consistent with recommended grass length grooming requirements so you don’t damage it or leave it open to disease over the fall and winter seasons.
Cool-Season Grasses
- Fine fescue: 1.5 to 4 inches
- Kentucky bluegrass: 0.75 to 3.5 inches
- Perennial ryegrass: 0.75 to 2.5 inches
- Tall fescue: 1.5 to 4 inches
Warm-Season Grasses
- Bahia: 2.5 to 4 inches
- Bermuda: 0.5 to 2.5 inches
- Buffalo: 1.5 to 4 inches
- Centipede: 1 to 2.5 inches
- Kikuyu grass: 1 to 1.5 inches
- St. Augustine: 1 to 3 inches
- Zoysia: 0.5 to 3 inches
Continue to Water Your Plants
Hedges, fruit trees and shrubs all need water during colder winter months. If you don’t water your plants right it can result in serious damage due to dehydration and disease.
Use the Right Kinds of Plant Fertilizer
Granular fertilizer takes too long to dissolve, especially in colder temperatures. Make sure to use a spray applicator and non-granular fertilizer to prevent plants withering or suffering severe frost burns.
Don’t Skimp on Mulch Quality
Quality mulch will promote plant health, hydration, growth, and fertility. Bad mulch can introduce fungus or pests to otherwise healthy soil. Make sure to mulch before the ground has frozen.
Rake Your Yard
Keeping your yard tidy and clutter-free by raking prevents fungus and mold from thriving in your lawn. Make sure to remove accumulated snow after the weather improves.
Don’t Spray Plants With Pesticides in Colder Weather
Don’t use weed killers and such to treat plants when it dips below 60 degrees.
Plant New Plants as Early in the Spring as Possible
Shrubs, crops, and trees need some time to grow so don’t wait to plant them long after it’s safe to do so.
Don’t Neglect Pests Problems
If your plants have worms or their leaves show signs of pest infestation, take care of it immediately.
